Head coach Pete Smith is in his fifth season as head coach of
the Bears.
A 1991 graduate of Ursinus, Smith continues to set new
benchmarks for the men’s tennis program. The team’s 10
wins in 2010 and 11 wins in 2011 marked the first time in school
history that the men’s tennis program has recorded back to
back 10 win seasons. Following the 2010 campaign, Smith was named
Coach of the Year in the Centennial Conference.
During his time at Ursinus, Smith was no stranger to men's
tennis, as while a member of the team he won the 1990 Middle
Atlantic Conference Singles Championship and earned more than 50
wins as a singles player.
His athletic talents were not limited to the tennis court,
as Smith also excelled as a member of the football and basketball
squads. In basketball, Smith ranks sixth all-time in scoring with
1,443 points.
On the gridiron, Smith served as the punter for his senior
season.
Aside from coaching, Smith also serves his alma mater as a
member of the Hall of Fame committee. He was inducted into
the Ursinus Athletic Hall of fame in 2003. He is also the
Commissioner of men's tennis for the Centennial
Conference.
"We were very young last year, but that experience will be
invaluable. There was a learning curve for my guys as
freshman, but they have committed themselves to this program and I
expect us to continue to get better. It is a very exciting
time for the men’s tennis program.”
Smith lives in King of Prussia with his wife Kimberly, who is a 1986 graduate of Ursinus, and his six-year old daughter Olivia.
