Ward named Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Men's Basketball Player of the Year

PHILADELPHIA- Ursinus junior forward Jon Ward (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) has been named the 2011-12 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Basketball Performer of the Year. Ward is one of five student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Basketball Team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

A junior forward, Ward has a 3.82 grade-point average and is majoring in physics. He was a first-team All-Centennial Conference selection and was also named to the league's All-Academic team. Ward scored his 1,000th career point this season and averaged 16.5 points per game. He also shot better than 60 percent from the floor.

The Allentown, Pa. native, who attended Parkland High School, was named a 2012 Capital One First Team Academic All-District selection. He has volunteered with the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament, the Mercy Hospice Women's Shelter and with SHARE, a local food bank. This summer, Ward will be interning at a nuclear reactor in France.

Ward is joined on the Academic All-Area team by junior T.J. DiLeo of Temple, senior Ian Goldberg of Haverford, junior Khiry Hankins of Holy Family, and senior Colin McCarthy of Arcadia.
