Ursinus slips past Swarthmore
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College men's lacrosse team trailed behind Swarthmore 6-7 with 2:04 and rallied back to win 8-7. The game winning goal came from an unassisted goal from junior attacker Steve Smyrl with 1:01 left in regulation.
Ursinus improves their record to 5-3 and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference while Swarthmore falls to 2-5 going 0-1 in the Centennial.
For Swarthmore Brendan Conway and Andrew Preiser led the Garnet contributing three points each from four goals and two assists.
The Bears fought through a tough first period falling behind early but with a pair of goals from Mussoline were able to come out of the quarter tied 2-2.
In the second, the Bears took control of the game only committing only three turnovers and outscoring the Garnet 3-1 to go into halftime with the lead 5-3.
Swarthmore returned after halftime with a strong showing scoring four unanswered goals and slipping past the Bears while shorthanded to take a 7-5 lead, scoring with one second remaining in the period.
An unassisted goal by Jake Webber cut into Swarthmore's lead making 6-7 with 11:51 remaining in the game. The Garnet shut down the Bears offense holding them until two minutes remaining when Tucker Noel tied the game on goal assisted by Mark Stratton. One minute later Steve Smyrl sealed the game muscling his way through the middle to score with 1:01 on the clock.
In goal Brian Neff shut down the Garnet finishing with nine saves recording four of them in the final period.
The Bears will continue its Centennial Conference schedule at Franklin and Marshall Wednesday March 26th.
