Bears fifth after day one of CC Championships

 

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Ursinus College swimming teams opened up day one of the three-day Centennial Conference Championships on Friday at Franklin & Marshall College.

The women are in fifth after day one with a score of 121, while the men are also in fifth with a score of 135.5.

In the opening event of the finals, the team of freshman Philip Quick (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional), freshman David Yazbeck (Dorchester Center, Mass./Boston Latin School), sophomore Christopher Smith (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and junior Lloyd Tannenbaum (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) was fifth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:28.41. The team of sophomore Christopher Doyle (Holliston, Mass./Holliston), freshman Nicholas Roberts (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), sophomore Kevin Tallon (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and freshman Ryan Furlong (Douglaston, N.Y./Xavier) finished 13th with a time of 1:31.56.

Tannenbaum finished second in the 500 free finals, grabbing the silver medal with a personal best time and school record mark of 4:43.68, followed by freshman Scott Paine (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) in sixth place with a mark of 4:46.54. Smith was seventh in the event with a time of 4:48.12, followed by freshman David Wagner (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) in 14th place with a personal best mark of 4:56.83.

In the 200 IM finals, Quick was 11th with a time of 2:02.62. In the 50 free finals, Yazbeck was fourth with a time of 21.84.

The Bears closed the night by finishing sixth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:38.14. The team was made up of Paine, Quick, Yazbeck and Smith. The team of Wagner, Doyle, Roberts and freshman Adam McGonigle (Villanova, Pa./Harriton) finished 13th with a time of 3:52.17.   

In the morning preliminaries, Paine finished fourth in the 500 free with a then school record time of 4:46.31, followed by Tannenbaum in fifth place with a mark of 4:46.53, which was a personal best.

Smith finished sixth in the prelims with a then personal best of 4:48.22, followed by Wagner in 13th at 4:56.99.

In the 200 IM, Quick was 11th with a time of 2:02.60, also a personal best.

Finally, in the morning's 50 free prelim, Yazbeck set a new school record with a time of 21.76. That mark broke the oldest school record.
