Bears finish up quad slate with wins over McDaniel, NYU and SUNY-Oswego

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus closed out the dual meet season by going 3-0 in a quad with McDaniel, SUNY-Oswego and New York University. With the three wins, the Bears finished 12-2 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial.

More importantly, Ursinus coach Bill Racich continued to move up the ladder in wins as scored his 450th career win during the quad. The day started with a 23-16 win over McDaniel, followed by a 31-14 win over New York University and then ended with a 34-12 win over Oswego.

In the McDaniel match, junior Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won his match at 133 with a 3-2 decision over Tommy Goretsas to give Ursinus its first points of the match.

Trailing 9-3, junior 149 pounder Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) got a 10-2 major decision over Logan Yox to cut the deficit to 9-7, followed by a win from senior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) at 157 over Torin Lehmann for a  13-9 lead. Sophomore Andrew Corbett (Pittsgrove, N.J./Shalick) got a 9-6 decision over Matt Peters giving Ursinus a 16-9 lead after the 165 bout.

At 174, sophomore Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) got a 4-2 overtime win over Chris Urps for a  19-9 Ursinus lead, followed by an 11-0 major decision for senior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) for a 23-9 advantage after the 184 match.

Against NYU, Ursinus fell behind 8-0 before sophomore Curtis Watkins (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) got a 14-4 major decision over Clement Brommier at 149, followed by a forfeit win at 157 for Whitham. Behind 14-13 after the 174 match, Ursinus got back-to-back pins from Murren and freshman 197 pounder Taylor Gload (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township). Sophomore Bill Cornely won his match at 285, with a :45 pin over Rudy De La Cruz.

Against Oswego, the Bears won the last seven bouts after trailing 12-0. McCormick pinned Randy Sisenstein at 149 in 2:12, followed by a 13-5 major decision from Whitham over Nick Rogers at 157. At 165, Corbett pinned Nick Massaro at 4:21. Sophomore Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) downed Dan Sutherland at 174 10-3 for a 19-12 lead, followed by a tech fall from Murren over Kevin Shirley 18-0. A Gload forfeit and Cornely 12-4 win provided the final points.

Ursinus will travel to the Centennial Conference Championships two weeks from Saturday at Washington & Lee.
